Advanced Biology Course at NatLab: Exploring Sustainable Solutions with Fungi
Our advanced biology course recently had the opportunity to visit the NatLab der Freien Universität Berlin and participate in the workshop “Fantastic Fungi – Can fungi help save the resources of our world?”
The workshop focused on the fascinating role of fungi in addressing global sustainability challenges. Students explored how fungi can contribute to environmental solutions, for example through breaking down pollutants, supporting recycling processes, or inspiring innovative materials.
The session combined theoretical input with hands-on laboratory work. Students conducted experiments, examined samples, and analyzed their findings with great concentration and care—experiencing what real scientific research looks like in practice. Their curiosity, focus, and enthusiasm for scientific inquiry were evident throughout the day.
The visit provided valuable insights into current research approaches and highlighted the importance of science in tackling global issues. It also emphasized the relevance of interdisciplinary thinking and practical experience in STEM education.
We would like to thank the NatLab team for their excellent guidance and for offering such an inspiring and engaging workshop experience.
