Platanus Brings The Wizard of Oz to the Stage

Last weekend, a long-held dream finally became reality: our school community proudly presented two sold-out performances of The Wizard of Oz at the Pfefferberg Theatre.

What the audience experienced on Friday and Saturday was much more than just a school production. It was the culmination of years of dreaming and the planning, rehearsing, problem-solving, and teamwork since the beginning of this school year. Students from Grade 1 all the way through Grade 11 took to the stage together, creating a truly unique production that showcased the talent, dedication, and courage of our school community.

The idea of producing a full-scale musical was first discussed by Ms Sejnoha and Mr Marcus five years ago. At the time, it seemed like an exciting but distant vision. This year, however, all the pieces finally came together, and the journey to Oz began.

Of course, every great adventure comes with its challenges. Along the way, there were moments when the sheer amount of work, time, and financial resources required felt overwhelming. More than once, people wondered whether it would all come together in the end. Fortunately, thanks to the support, commitment, and generosity of many members of our community, it did.

The result was nothing short of magical.

Our talented cast captivated the audience with outstanding acting, singing, and stage presence. From Dorothy’s journey down the Yellow Brick Road to the adventures with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion, every scene reflected the hard work and enthusiasm of our students. It was particularly special to see performers from such a wide range of year groups sharing the stage and creating something together.

The enthusiastic audience response confirmed what we already knew: this production was something very special. Both performances were completely sold out, and the standing ovations at the end of each show were a fitting tribute to everyone involved.

A project of this scale would never have been possible without the support of many people. Our heartfelt thanks go to our Förderverein, Platanus & Friends, whose generous financial support helped make the production possible.

We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Mr Marcus and Ms Sejnoha, who not only had the original vision for this project but also turned it into reality alongside their full-time responsibilities as teacher and principal.

A huge thank you goes to all parents, students and colleagues who supported rehearsals, logistics, organisation, and countless tasks behind the scenes. We are also deeply grateful to Karline for her professional expertise and invaluable guidance throughout the process.

And finally, the Oscar for Best Costumes Ever undoubtedly goes to Ms Förster Olson, whose creativity and dedication brought the colourful world of Oz to life in spectacular fashion.

Looking back, it is hard to believe that this project was once only an idea. Today, it stands as a wonderful example of what can happen when students, staff, parents and supporters work together toward a shared goal.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who contributed to this unforgettable production and already look forward to many more outstanding performances in the years to come.

After all, once you’ve followed the Yellow Brick Road, it is hard not to dream about the next adventure.
