Social Commitment for the Needy in Berlin!
Once a month people of all ages and from all over the world cook meals for the needy in Berlin-Kreuzberg at the “Homeless Veggie Dinner”. In March 2010 the project was founded by Dario Adamic with just three helpers. Since then, this event has become so successful that the organisers have already had to move to a larger location several times. Every month dozens of volunteers come forward to cut fruit and vegetables, cook delicious vegetarian dishes from food donations or serve the meals. In the process, an international social network has emerged. The organisation is largely handled via Facebook. In addition, flyers and posters are distributed and posted in soup kitchens, social facilities and homeless meeting places.
The offer is primarily aimed at the homeless and needy. The common dinner also serves as a meeting point for people who would otherwise rarely have contact with one another: tourists and people from Berlin, the destitute, artists, students and people who like to think outside the box. As a rule, the more affluent visitors tend to give a donation. First and foremost, it is about a warm and above all healthy meal for people who are less well off, but equally important are the feeling social togetherness, the mutual exchanges and sociability.
In our school we teach the children how important and meaningful social commitment and responsibility for other people in our society are. Every year, this project makes a significant contribution to this.
We would like to thank above all our team leader and teacher Mr. Gaunt, who initiated the project and collects food donations every year with the children of our 3rd and 4th classes. This year, several shopping bags filled to the brim with pasta, rice, couscous, canned fruit and vegetables came together. We would also like to thank Mr. Zeh for driving the groceries to Kreuzberg and of course all the children in grades 3b, 4a and 4b and their parents for the great support.
